What My Most Popular Reel Taught Me About Balance

Right now, reels are the shiny new thing on Instagram. Everyone is doing them. Lots of business providers utilizing reels to give their followers value in a fun quick way. I was really hesitant to start doing reels. It just seemed like so much work! But eventually, I relented and decided to try to incorporate them into my feed. Most of my reels are business related with a handful of fun ones. But the one that went “viral” (with 25.1k views) was pure fun and it taught me a lot about balance.

If you follow me on Instagram, I mainly use it to share about my business. Because it’s one of the newest features, reels get pushed way more than static feed posts. Most of my reels only ever get around 2k views, which isn’t bad at all. But after attending a birthday party for one of my girls, I had the perfect reel idea that had nothing at all to do with Creations By Sasha but was a perfect reflection of me.

It’s a common job with us older millennials that we’re no longer have “knees like Megan” but we’re still trying to hold on. Before my friend’s party, I came across a “Knees Like Megan” reel that I loved. So when my girlfriend sent me a video of our night out and I’m dropping it all the way low and looking like a pro, I knew I just had to remix it with the reel I saw earlier. When I first posted it, it actually only got around 800 view initially. But almost two weeks later, it started taking off in views! It’s currently my most liked and viewed post ever with 915 likes and 25.1k views. I still don’t know what made it take off but for almost a month I would get daily notifications of new likes and views.

What does this have to do with balance? Posting that reel – a part of myself that I rarely show on social media but that my friends know well – reminded me that it’s okay to show all parts of ourselves. I’m always balancing whether I’m being authentic enough but also maintaining my private life. I want my Instagram family to feel like they know who I am when I show up but also want respect as a business owner, wife, and mom. It’s all a balancing act. This reel reminded me that there’s nothing wrong with showing off our fun side. Without that balance, life (and Instagram) would be pretty boring.
